Desktop System Information ManagementDesktop system hardware and software standards are maintained to ensure compatibility and usability across the campus. The definition of "State of the Art" is tied to the systems ability to operate the standard "Toolbox" application software. Each desktop system is mapped to a G:/ drive (Group Share) an an H:/ drive (Personal Share). Users should store any important data on these network shares. Only information stored on these network shares is backed up by network services. All information and non-toolbox applications stored on the local desktop system is the responsibility of the individual user. In the event of a desktop system failure, an analogous system (as available) will be used to replace the failing system. There will be no attempt to recover data stored on the local desktop system. Additionally, if you are receiving a New System as part of the college's Acquire/ Retire cycle you are responsible to ensure any local information is backed-up to one of your network drives. If you need a file or directory restored to the G:/ drive or the H:/ drive please contact the Helpdesk with the following information.
The restoration procedure that Network Services follows can take up to 48 hours depending upon staff availability.
Best Practices for managing personal information:
Datacenter StrategyThe Information Technologies department operates three (3) Datacenters [CARS/ Network Operations Center, Internet Operations Center, and Windows NT Resource Center]. Each Datacenter serves as primary for certain services and alternate for other services. The Information Technologies department performs backup of every file server nightly. The tapes are then removed from the primary Datacenter to the alternate Datacenter. On Friday a weekend tape is used then stored in an alternate data center.
