Courses I frequently teach

  • PHY 101 - Physics I - 4 credits with Lab.  Trigonometry-based, designed for students majoring in assorted Technology fields, students transferring in other science and health fields (chemistry, biology, pre-pharmacy, pre-med), and students requiring a lab science to transfer who enjoy math.    Don't let the "101" designation fool you - this course makes extensive use of algebra, pre-calc, and trigonometry.  Co-req: MAT 124; I recommend a grade of C or better in MAT 123 before attempting this course.  I teach this course almost every Fall.
  • PHY 102 - Physics II - 4 credits with Lab.  "Sequel" to PHY 101.  Prereq: PHY 101; I recommend a grade of C or better in PHY 101, MAT 123, MAT 124.  I teach this course some Springs.
  • PHY 105 - General Physics I - 4 credits with Lab. Calculus-based, designed for students majoring in Basic Engineering, or intending to transfer in Physics or Engineering.  Also good for students who need a lab science course and enjoy math, and for students transferring in other science and health fields (chemistry, biology, pre-pharmacy, pre-med) and want an advantage over their competition.  MAT 233 prereq; I recommend a grade of C or better in MAT 233 before attempting this course, and completed MAT 234 or taking it at the same time.  I teach this course almost every Spring, both on-ground and online formats are available.
  • PHY 106 - General Physics II - 4 credits with Lab. "Sequel" to PHY 105.  Prereqs: PHY 105 and MAT 234; I recommend a grade of C or better in each before attempting this course.  I teach this course some Falls.
  • SCI 135 - Introduction to Astronomy - 3 credits non-lab.  A conceptual survey course about astronomy.  Don't let the lack of math fool you, the concepts are still difficult.  Recommended for students needing either a 3-credit science or math course to graduate, and for students with a genuine passion for astronomy but not much math background yet.  Students are required to write a research paper including citations.  Prereqs ENG 101, MAT 090.  This course is offered on an irregular schedule, sometimes online and sometimes on-ground.
  • SCI 105 - Integrated Science: Earth and Space - 4 credits with Lab.  Designed for students who need a lab science.  This course focuses on the basic concepts of astronomy and earth science. Students apply fundamental physics and chemistry to the study of the physical world they live in, and, through the laboratory component, gain an understanding of the methods and applications of science. The course is designed for but not limited to students in Elementary and Early Childhood Education Programs. Prerequisite: ENG 100, MAT 095 with a “C” or better in MAT 095 on departmental exam or appropriate placement score. F/S/SU  This course is offered regularly, but I rarely teach it.
  • SCI 140 - Astronomy I: Close to Home - 4 credits with Lab.  Designed for students who need a lab science.  This course introduces students to the study of the universe starting with historical ideas such as the geocentric universe, through the tools that astronomers use today, and ends with our modern understanding of the Solar System including the Sun.  Students apply their math skills to astronomical situations and learn the physics behind the pretty pictures.  Labs allow students to learn in a hands-on setting how astronomers use physics to deduce the "facts" of the universe.  Prereqs ENG 100, MAT 099.  This course is offered on an irregular schedule.
