1. Consider all the characters and objects mentioned or referred to in the poem-- in addition to the Duke, the Duchess, and the painting.
2. Select a character and an object associated with the person.
3. Select A or B and write about 250 words. Include two quoted lines or phrases from the poem and cite the lines.
A. Give voice to one of those characters who doesn't speak in the poem. Show how the character might describe the object's significance and at the same time reveal an understanding of the Duke or Duchess or of both.
B. Write as the Duke describing an object to someone besides the envoy.
