Park News
The park suffered severe tree damage along several trails during the winter of 2005-2006. Large numbers of trees, mostly spruces, were toppled or damaged during a wind storm in January, 2006. The trails most affected are:

The trails are open, though some work may still be taking place this spring.
The eastern end of the Pumpelly Trail traverses private lands. A new lease agreement was reached this winter, though there is ongoing discussion with landowners regarding a possible change to the trailhead and realignment of the trail at that end. No changes are imminent.
Scheduled projects
This year, the Park is planning major maintenance along sections of several trails. These are
July 15 is New Hampshire Trails Day, and several volunteer groups are expected to join Park personnel in a big push to improve the quality of these and other trails then.
Construction of a new campground at Gilson Pond should begin soon for the the summer. Thirty-six secluded sites are planned, primarily for tent camping. Four sites will have electric hookups and are suitable for small pop-up trailers and campers. No water hookups will be available at those sites. Once the new campground opens, the current campground at the Park Headquarters will be converted to group camping areas. It will be available for individual campers during the winter.
