The View to the North-Northeast--Unenhanced, with binoculars

Compare this photo with the enhanced photo of the same scene.  August 24, 2003 was an especially clear summer day, providing visibility of about 105 to 110 miles. Some unusual haze, perhaps smoke from Midwestern power generators, provided an interesting range of tones that helps make the different ranges looking toward the White Mountains stand out one from another. The haze left just enough clarity in the air that Mt. Washington is just barely visible if you know where to look.  Note that while this shows how the scene might look with binoculars, Mt. Washington was visible with the naked eye as well. While this is "unenhanced," even this print has been darkened considerably to pull out the detail in the horizon better.

Photographed August 24, 2003.
