Dental Assisting

In order to participate in the Dental Programs, all students must demonstrate their ability to comply with the following.

  1. The decision to work in a health care profession should be based on an understanding of various health care professions. Some health professions require working in intense situations with very ill or severely injured people. Some require working with the mentally ill. Dental practitioners work with all types of patients.

Therefore: it is essential that students in the dental programs be able to render assistance to individuals of all cultures, across the lifespan, without prejudice or repulsion.

  1. Critical to the selection of a profession is the understanding of the nature and responsibilities of the profession. Not everyone is suited to a certain profession.

Therefore: it is essential that students in the dental programs know the difference between the dental profession and other health professions, know the basic functions of the profession and agree with the basic philosophy and practice of dentistry.

3.      Dental professionals must have effective communications skill. Practitioners are required to communicate and build relationships with individuals of all ages, races, sexes, and cultural differences. They are also required to communicate in groups.

Therefore: it is essential that students in the dental programs have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, in English, using appropriate grammar, vocabulary, and word usage. They must also have the ability to consult with others as necessary, report findings to appropriate persons, foster collegial relationships, and instruct others.

  1. Consistent performance of duties in any profession is of major importance. Personal problems, health problems, and outside employment, regardless of the nature, cannot interfere with the performance of assignments, and class/clinic attendance. Students must be responsible for their own transportation.

Therefore: it is essential that students in the dental programs be responsible individuals and meet all requirements set forth in the program.

  1. The Dental programs utilize clinical sites, which have attire regulations for safety and patient-care purposes. Clothing must be presentable and clean in accordance with QCC Dental Program clinic regulations.

Therefore: it is essential that students dress in accordance with the recommended college/clinic policies.

  1. Professional ethics is the rightness and wrongness in relation to performing duties and responsibilities of a profession. The attitudes and values an individual has in relationship to carrying out their duties and responsibilities influence ethical behavior.

Therefore: it is essential that students adhere to a code of ethical behaviors that will allow them to follow standards as defined in their course work.  Plagiarized work and other acts of dishonesty will be dealt with by immediate disciplinary action that may result in dismissal from the program.

  1. Dental professionals must function as members of a team.

Therefore it is essential that dental program students be able to work collaboratively as well as follow instructions and accept feedback as given by faculty members.
