The English Department offers composition and literature courses to fulfill
program and transfer requirements as well as developmental courses to prepare
students for success in college. We further the college's mission by helping
students acquire the communication skills necessary for academics and careers.
Courses in reading, writing, and speech communication prepare students to think
critically and learn how to learn. The Department emphasizes the following
learning goals:
-
Writing effectively for audiences in both academic and workplace settings
-
Applying critical judgment in reading fiction and non-fiction
-
Developing creativity in written expression
-
Evaluating the complexity of human experience through reading, writing, and
oral presentation
-
Recognizing local, national, and international perspectives in communication
-
Employing current technology for effective research and purposeful
communication
-
Understanding the role of ethical standards in problem solving
