Projects Update
Along with the obvious - The Loop Road and office fixups, some of you may not be aware of another initiative which addresses not only asthetics, but more importantly energy efficiency. In collaboration with Constellation Energy the College has identified the following items to either repair or replace which will yield needed energy and water savings.

Energy Conservation Measures include but are not limited to:

*Energy Efficient Lighting - Admin. Bldg.: Many areas such as the Old Chapel, staircases and some offices still contain old inefficient lamps. These outdated items will be replaced with high efficiency lighting reducing the amount of energy consumed.

*Steam trap and condensate piping - Admin. Bldg.: Our existing steam system was in poor condition. Build up of condensate in the steam lines would cause the banging in radiators that we all have heard. Leaks and poorly functioning steam traps were also detected. As a result, many traps, branch lines and condensate steam related equipment will be replaced. Many of you have noticed the long trench in the basement hallway. A main condensate return section of piping was replaced as well. This work will minimize heat loss, provide comfortable temperatures and yield less fuel costs.

*Install Energy Efficient Motors & Variable Speed Drives - Athletic Center and Surprenant:Our existing mortors used for air handling are low efficient, aging and non variable speed. By installing variable speed drives on new motors will allow for soft starting of mechanical units. These drives will consume significantly less energy in demand and kilowatt hours.

*Surprenant window replacement : By now most of you have noticed the ongoing window replacement in Surprenant Hall. The old windows were single glazed, very difficult to open/close and were the source of complaints with respect to air infiltration and excessive heat on sunny days. 165 new energy efficient windows are scheduled to be replaced. These windows are constructed with low - E glazing which substantially reduce the amount of heat transmission through the glass on sunny days and provide a tight seal when closed.

*Revolving Door - Basement entrance to Admin:Our current sliding glass doors that most of us travel through on a daily basis has been removed and will be replaced with a new revolving door. Since this entrance is a high traffic area, the doors would stay open for long periods of time and the doors were a source of constant maintenance problems. A lot of heat is lost when the doors are opened and this heat had to constantly be replaced causing a significant amount of energy to be consumed for this one area. The revolving door will serve as better thermal buffer between the inside and outside spaces resulting in less cold air infiltration in winter months with less heat loss and higher energy savings.

*Split system Air Conditioning controls:Several units that provide cooling to spaces around campus will be wired up with new controllers and sensors to allow Facilities personnel to manage these units. Currently, many spaces are cooled whether the space is occupied or not. This issue will be addressed through a computerized energy management system. Cooling units will be placed on a schedule. The cooling unit will operate when the office space is occupied and turned off at a time when occupants usually go home for the day. This will save energy and extend the life of these cooling units with less run time.

Green Campus Update
*QCC Swap Shop:A small shed has been purchased with money from the Books for Africa program for the purpose of allowing staff and faculty to bring non-wanted usable items from home to be placed in the shed. After placing an item in the shed if you see something you like - take it. Currently, the Swap Shop contains an assortment of cook books, televisions, radios and shelving.

Thanks for reading and have a great Summer!
