Closing times

HLC patrons will be given a 30-minute and a 10-minute warning before the building's regularly scheduled closing times. Patrons should proceed to the Circulation Desk to return Reserve materials and check out books well before the final moment. The clock by the Circulation desk is the “official” clock for closing time. A sign with current hours is always posted at the entrances to the building.

Computers and electronic resources

All technology usage in HLC is governed by the QCC Information Systems Acceptable Use Policy. The Alden Library is open to the public but priority will be given to QCC students, faculty and staff who are using computers for course related assignments and research.

Emergencies

Notify any HLC staff member of a medical emergency or a crime in progress. HLC staff will call Public Safety immediately. In an emergency that requires evacuation of the building, follow the instructions of the HLC staff. Mobility impaired persons on the third floor should make their presence known to the library staff and will be directed where to wait for safety personnel.  Public Safety officers will be notified if a library user will not leave the building during an emergency.

Group Study Rooms

There are nine group study rooms in the HLC.  These rooms can be used by students for two hours at a time on a first come, first served basis. Groups of three or more may reserve group study rooms in advance. Priority will be given to academic group study.  Appropriate use includes: small group project work, tutoring sessions, makeup tests proctored by faculty, small group viewing of course required videos, etc.  For more information, ask Information Desk staff on the 2nd floor of the HLC.

Tutoring Centers (Communication Skills Center, Individualized Learning Center, Math Center)

Each of the three tutoring centers has a TutorTrac log-in station.  Students are required to log-in before accessing computers/tutors, and to log-out when they leave.  Policies on food, drink, and cell phone use will be strictly enforced.  Computers in the tutoring centers are for academic work only.  Therefore, all recreational use (instant messaging, MySpace, FaceBook, music downloading, and streaming video of sports events, music videos, etc) is strictly prohibited.

Unaccompanied children

Children should never be left unattended in the HLC or anywhere else on the QCC campus. Children must be under the supervision (within view) of a parent or adult guardian at all times. Children are not allowed to use HLC equipment, including computers. Parents should be aware of and respect the fact that people are using the 3rd floor Alden Library for quiet study.
