Asian Longhorned Beetle

You may have noticed the campus has had many of its trees cut down since the ice storm of December 2008.  These trees were already slated to come down before the ice storm damaged them.  They are infested with the Asian Longhorn Beetle, a pest of hardwood trees including maple, birch and horse chestnut.  The beetles cause damage by tunneling within the trunks and branches of trees, disrupting the sap flow and weakening and eventually killing them.   Learn all about this invasive species and why trees are being removed to prevent the infestation from spreading.
