“Reducing Crime and Promoting Safety”

SAFETY TIP OF THE MONTH: For pedestrian safety, stop for
any in a crosswalk, even if it is not marked. When you stop for a pedestrian in
a crosswalk, stop well back so that drivers in the other lanes can also see the
pedestrian in time to stop.

PHONE SCAMS
Telephone scams always sound a little unbelievable-until
they happen to you. Con artists are very persuasive and most people naturally
let their guard down in the privacy of their homes, expecting a friend or
relative to be on the phone, not a criminal. Some tips to avoid being a victim:
*Never give personal information including credit card or
social security numbers.
*If you are not interested or feel uneasy about a call,
hang up.
*Never allow yourself to be pushed into a hurried decision.
*If an offer ever sounds too good to be true, it probably
is.

EMERGENCY GUIDE/TORNADO
Fear at the time of a disaster breed panic, and panic can
account for more injuries than the disaster itself. Calming personnel and
students and preventing panic is critical.
IN THE EVENT OF A TORNADO
Don’t hesitate, take immediate cover
Go to lower level areas (no windows)---take cover in an
interior room or hall---use heavy furniture for shelter if possible
Familiarize yourself with assembly are locations listed in
the (Red) Emergency guides prior to any emergency
Always follow the direction of emergency response
personnel.

THE
ADVENTURES OF OFFICER BOB

Thieving Tom
and Dopey Dan tried to pull the front off of an ATM machine by attaching a
chain around the machine to their truck bumper. Instead of pulling the panel
off the machine they pulled the rear bumper off their truck. Scared, from
all the noise they made, they drove off. Officer Bob arrived and found the
bumper with the license plate still attached. Officer Bob eventually
arrested both Thieving Tom and Dopey Dan.

PARKING
APPEAL EXCUSE OF THE MONTH: “I was not
parked in a prohibited area first of all and it’s not my car, mine is in the
shop that’s why there is no decal. I will not be paying this violation.”
The
use of car alarms and clubs on the steering wheel will not always prevent crime,
but will often deter the thief. The thief will look for an easier car to
steal.----
